  • The learner will develop pairs of fiction and nonfiction books for preschool and pre-k children.
  • The learner will choose an appropriate informational text that pairs with a week’s focus book during REAL time.
  • The learner will use informational texts and responsive instruction during REAL time sessions to support children reaching REAL time goals.

    REAL Time Part 1

     Duration 44  minutes
    This course will help learners choose REAL Time topics, identify the components of informational texts and choose appropriate informational texts to use with their children.
  2. Lesson 2

    Learn More: Why REAL Time Works

     Duration 5  minutes
    This lesson presents the research behind REAL Time, and makes a strong case for using informational texts with young children. Bibliography included.
  3. Lesson 3

    REAL Time Part 2

     Duration 36  minutes
    This course walks learners through the REAL Time Planning Guide and helps them recognize the important components of REAL Time in action.
  4. Lesson 4

    Responsive Instruction for REAL Time

     Duration 25  minutes
    This course shows learners how to use checklists and the REAL Time Ladder to respond to children's needs in the classroom.
  5. Lesson 5

    Learn More: Previewing Vocabulary with English Learners

     Duration 6  minutes
    Carrie, an English Learners expert, explains how to give the English Learners in your classroom the vocabulary they need in order to participate in START and REAL Time. Video included.
  6. Lesson 6

    Real Time End of Course Assessment

     Duration 16  minutes
    In this lesson, you will take the end of course assessment and post course survey. You must score 80% or higher to pass the assessment and receive your certificate of completion.
