  • Learners will be familiar with gradual release, a three-part teaching method where you are gradually releasing the responsibility of learning from the teacher to the child, and will understand when to implement learning routines in their classroom.
  • Learners will be familiar with all the components of Phonological Sensitivity and PAC Skills: Phonemic Awareness, Alphabet Knowledge, and Concepts of Print/Print Awareness.
  • Learners will understand how to assess and monitor children’s progress of PAC skills, how to give feedback during instructional routines, and how to differentiate instruction and support for dual language learners.

    Domains of Emergent Literacy

     Duration 24  minutes
    In this lesson, you will learn why phonemic awareness, alphabet knowledge, and concepts of print, also known as print awareness, are vital for emergent literacy development and the continued role of phonological sensitivity and its significance.
  2. Lesson 2

    Instructional Routines

     Duration 20  minutes
    In this lesson, you will learn about gradual release, a three-step method where you gradually release responsibility of learning from the teacher to the child. In addition, you will learn about the different instructional times of day where you can teach these emergent literacy skills.
  3. Lesson 3

    Phonological Sensitivity

     Duration 13  minutes
    In this lesson, you will learn about the continued importance of phonological sensitivity, the skills that make it up, and how you can embed these activities into your teaching day.
  4. Lesson 4

    Phonemic Awareness

     Duration 63  minutes
    In this lesson, you will take a deeper dive into phonemic awareness and its importance. You will learn about each of the skills on the phonemic awareness continuum and you will be introduced to instructional routines that you can use to teach these skills. You will also learn how you can assess and monitor children’s progress in this area. Plus, you will see real classroom examples.
  5. Lesson 5

    Alphabet Knowledge 

     Duration 30  minutes
    In this lesson, you will take a deeper dive into alphabet knowledge. You will learn about the connection between letters and sounds. We will show you how you can teach these important skills using the alphabet knowledge instructional routine. You will also learn how you can assess and monitor children’s progress in this area. Plus, you will see real classroom examples.
  6. Lesson 6

    Concepts of Print

     Duration 19  minutes
    In this lesson, you will take a deeper dive into print awareness. You will learn about the three categories of print awareness and see how to use think-a-louds to embed these into your day, as you demonstrate the knowledge of how print works and how it carries a message.
  7. Lesson 7

    Emergent Literacy End of Course Assessment

     Duration 18  minutes

Rollins Birth Through Five Facilitator
Nathan is a Language and Literacy Instructional Facilitator for the Rollins Center. He provides online coaching through Cox Campus and has been in the Early Education field for over 25 years. In his career, Nathan has worked as a classroom teacher, curriculum coordinator, program director, and a Quality Rated Assessor/ Reviewer for the state of Georgia. He has served on the GAEYC Board of Directors and is an board member of the Black Child Development Institute-Atlanta (BCDI-Atlanta).
